Bahariyya is the closet of the four main Oasis to Cairo. The town itself offers accommodation and cafes and also a few sites including the temple of Alexandra the Great which is the only one in Egypt.

However in 1999 an excavation provided an astonishing find of (estimated) over 1000 mummies. Therefore this has identified this Oasis as a thriving Necropolis as it had been some 2000 years previously. The site is unfortunately not open to the public but there is still plenty to see including the spectacular Black desert which is best enjoyed within a 4x4.
